Hey there, I agree with the contest being started just in december, but I disagree this time for the submissions too. I think it would be nice to make a votation to a theme till 15th, and then start submitting. I think everyone's prepared, the case is just that there are a few people that didn't repared this updates yet.
And we still have 20 days of the month, that's enough to get the submission thing going.

What about a night time theme.
Pictures taken in low-light.
That's something I havn't seen yet.
I bet you could get some pretty cool pictures togeather from that.

Maybe clean out the complete gallery to start new. And then when starting the third month, you clean out the first month, renaming the winners (and keep them of course), so everybody gets his exposure, but the gallery is neat and tidy.

Maybe on top of that, to get rid of the whole ID-problem, make a new ID every month (in the layout of the journal), with the name of the Month and the Theme it is going to be.

So after a couple of months, you get an ID, the prizewinner, ID, prizewinners, etc. (from old to new).

And keep the themes detailed (so no 'red' themes), not country based (so no thanksgiving, but thankfulness (like dale427 suggested)), not season bound, etc.

On top of themes, you can give conditions like a 2s shutterspeed or f=8, so people get to know their equipment better.
